A meteor breaking up in the atmosphere can be heard as a delayed boom, often minutes after a bright light.

How to tell

  • A bright light or fireball reported first
  • Sound arrives a minute or more after the light
  • Reported across a very large area
  • Rare, and usually widely reported elsewhere too
