Transformer or electrical fault
A failing transformer or line fault makes a single hard bang, often with a flash and a local power cut.
How to tell
- One bang, not repeated
- A blue-white flash at the same instant
- Power goes out on nearby streets right afterwards
- Utility trucks show up within the hour
When it usually happens
Any time. More common in heat waves and during wind or ice.
