Transformer or electrical fault

A failing transformer or line fault makes a single hard bang, often with a flash and a local power cut.

How to tell

  • One bang, not repeated
  • A blue-white flash at the same instant
  • Power goes out on nearby streets right afterwards
  • Utility trucks show up within the hour

When it usually happens

Any time. More common in heat waves and during wind or ice.
